Ebb and Flow Tové's Two Minute Training Tip

Friday, 03 February 2012 06:08 Written by  Tove

This is the first in a series of short two minute tips that I'm producing on vocal training and presentation skills.

Our lives are rapidly moving towards entertainment and education on demand. We like things when we want them how we want them. These short clips are time efficient and they have enough content to be relevant and useful.

I've always been a fan of short spurts of information. This series will...

approach training from a different perspective, finding metaphors that help explain and expand on the ideas I'll be working with. Have fun and please do go ahead and comment on the videos. I'd love to know how YOU feel about them since I am packaging for your benefit.

In the "Ebb and Flow" clip, I'm using the ocean as an allegory for the voice. I show the ebb and flow of the ocean tide and highlight how this enhances a vocal performance. The nuance, the light and shade - these are all excellent elements that should be incorporated in a vocal delivery to prevent it from being a flat monotone that bores people into not listening. I film a seagull in flight acoss tumbling breakers and recommend that movement should be incorporated in a vocal performance. In this respect I am referring not only to the physical movement of your body but the perceptable movement throughout the delivery.

I give a tip on a phrase that should never be spoken in presentations, "At the end of the day". Speakers have used the same old tired identical statements throughout the ages and audiences are looking for something fresh and new. The "Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking" line, is a nothing if not a big fat no!

Watch the video for the first few tips in the series and look out for more on the way.
