One of the calls was from the Producer I'd met on my audition day, inviting me to
a shoot at Coca Cola Park today to get some background material for Supersport.
With zero time to prepare I knew it was a test. They no doubt want to see how we look on camera, how well we handle live direction, how quickly we can remember suggested dialogue, how we work with a crew and of course a test of nerves to see how we perform under pressure with an unexpected delivery time.
I've been on the golf course when the sprinklers suddenly spring to life leaving you uncertain whether to take the swing or run out of the way. It was the last thing any of us could have predicted on a rugby field. The sprinkler system is so powerful it shoots above the cross bar right across the field.
My sister was doubling as photographer and videographer gathering images for the Tové Tabloid. She was calmly preparing herself with camera and bags merrily strewn across the players' shelter when the spray erupted. We ripped everything off to the tunnel, laughing at how bad the smell was but admiring how fabulous the turf looked.
The shoot was fun though and let me tell you it is NOT at all easy to squint into the sunlight and attempt to keep a normal expression on your face!
There's a lot that happens behind the scenes on any shoot and of course today was no exception. I'm a fan of having fun even in a serious situation. I confess, a few of my Tovélicious antics did make their way onto the field including some Kung fu funnies and a few songs like "Lean on me" as a the thing for me not to do with my battery pack in my back pocket against the goal posts.
Family, friends and fans have all expressed such kindness towards me. It is impossible to describe the joy of being affirmed by people who have no agenda except to be supportive. I focus on the positive messages and do whatever I can to avoid the vortex of negativity that some people manifest.
The wait continues and my nerves are threatening to strike. It's very South African of them and I fully understand. At least there is an end in sight and in comes in a fortnight from now. I'll let you know if I hear any further news. A special acknowledgment to all the ladies of the Lady Rugga Top 12 - all the very best!
